Japandi Pop

About the project

Japandi Pop is a design project that we completed for a client in Atlanta, GA. The client wanted a home that expressed their personality and values, and they were open to creating spaces that told a story. We started with the bedroom, which we designed with a Japandi theme. Japandi style is a fusion of Japanese and Scandinavian design, characterized by natural materials, minimalism, and simplicity. We used linen, wood, and other natural fabrics in the furniture pieces, and we suggested Portola Roman Clay paints for the walls to create a soft and textured look. The Japandi style space we created is serene, peaceful, and quiet.

But then the client surprised us by telling us that they loved to wake up and get hype in the bathroom. They wanted a space that was fun and playful, a place where they could let loose and be themselves. So we created a poppy bathroom that is covered in terrazzo tiles. Terrazzo is a type of flooring made from marble, granite, or other natural stones, mixed with cement or resin. It has a colorful, speckled appearance that is perfect for a playful space like this one. We chose ice blue for the bathtub and dark blue vogue tile for the walls, complemented by brass plumbing fixtures. The result is a bathroom that is bold, colorful, and full of energy.

Despite the stark contrast between the Japandi bedroom and the Pop! bathroom, we managed to find a way to bring the two spaces together. We did this by incorporating a small terracotta vanity into the bathroom, which is mounted beside a 3-bulb brass sconce. The terracotta vanity is a peaceful and natural piece that works well in the playful, poppy space we created. Overall, Japandi Pop is a design project that celebrates the client's personality and values, bringing together two seemingly disparate styles into a cohesive and unique whole.
